I wrote a creepy nursery rhyme, and Claude turned it into a 4-minute music video drawn entirely in SVG code

I write lyrics and make the music with Suno. This time it was a creepy nursery rhyme, "Ten Little Candles", and I asked Claude (Claude Code, a single cloud session) for a Tim Burton-ish music video, drawn as SVG.

What it built

  • Every frame is SVG drawn by code. No image generator, no stock art. The bedroom, the wrought-iron bed full of spirals, the kid with huge eyes and striped pajamas, the black cat, the thing with no eyes and a cracked porcelain face: about 2,700 lines of procedural JavaScript (tapered "ink" strokes, wobbly outlines, spirals everywhere).
  • Hand-drawn feel: a "line boil" filter (feTurbulence + feDisplacementMap) reseeded 12 times a second, like stop-motion.
  • Real candlelight: the room is lit through SVG masks, so it gets darker every time a candle goes out.
  • Synced word by word: it isolated the vocals with Demucs, got word timestamps with Whisper, fixed the line starts using the vocal energy, and locked the countdown to the beat grid (about 99 BPM). Each candle dies exactly on "nine, eight, seven…", and the door shakes nine times on "if it knocks nine times".
  • One function, two outputs: the whole clip is renderAt(t). The same code drives a live web player synced to the audio and renders the MP4 (headless Chromium screenshots piped into ffmpeg: 5,904 frames at 24 fps, 5 workers in parallel, about 25 minutes).

The part I liked most: it checked its own work. It rendered contact sheets of keyframes every few seconds, looked at them, and fixed what it saw: scenes that were too dark, a face pushing through the wallpaper that you couldn't read, tally marks that never showed up (it was setting a d attribute on a <g> instead of a <path>), and the eyeless creature looking like an egg (it got a hood and a crack).

From the MP3 to the first full 1080p render took about an hour and a half. It also wrote the YouTube description, with chapters and lyrics.

Happy to answer questions about the process!
